He quizzically twitches his nose and inches forward, this soft bundle that might at any moment scamper off in fright.  But patiently she watches him inch closer until he is nibbling the end of the carrot she has been holding.  Now he inches forward even more and so she slowly move her hand and sits the carrot on the ground by her knee.  He inches forward again until he is almost touching the hem of her dress.  She thinks she could sit like this for quite a while just studying his every move but has learned that it is a delicate task, this process of making friends.
